Importance of Vaccines
As winter slowly creeps up on us it is important to ensure your vaccinations are up to date. It is important to have vaccines not only to protect yourself but to stop the spread of serious diseases which affects the most vulnerable babies and elderly in our communities.
All vaccines approved for use in New Zealand have a good safety record and have ongoing safety monitoring.
The flu vaccine has now arrived into our practice and is funded for the following:
Adults 65 and over
Those with chronic health conditions as defined by the ministry of health.
And new to the Nelson region this year the following patients who are enrolled with us are also eligible for a free flu vaccine:
Those from a refugee background
Whanau of children who are living with a chronic condition
Whanau living with a pregnant woman or baby under 6 months
If you are not eligible for a free vaccine the cost is $28.00 for adults and children. Children who have not had a flu vaccine before are recommended to have two does 8 weeks apart to ensure total coverage.
Shingles is a debilitating disease that affects 97% of adults, if you have had chicken pox as a child the virus never leaves your system and can turn into shingles at anytime. We don't know what causes shingles but we can help you to prevent getting it. Zostavax is a funded vaccine which is available for adults aged 65 and over. If you are under 65 and want to have the vaccine we are happy to do this for you, there will however be a charge.
